Wintertime is a season liked by some and hated by others. Certainly the weather is conducive to doing all sorts of winter sports like skiing, snowboarding or sledding. More adventurous people may try trekking, snowkiting or ice diving. Adults praise the winter for long evenings in front of the fire with a mug of hot chocolate or a glass of wine. Children look forward to their winter break and resting a bit from the school routine. On the other hand, some say winter is the season of never-ending cold, gloom and short days and wait impatiently for the spring to come.

Winter officially starts on December 21st and ends on March 21st, although traditionally December, January and February are said to be the three winter months. Winter certainly abounds with holidays and occasions to celebrate. There is Christmas and New Year’s Eve at the end of December. January welcomes us with Twelfth Night (January 5th) and Epiphany (January 6th). In February, Americans celebrate Groundhog Day (February 2nd) and the entire world is in love on St Valentine’s Day (February 14th).
