Opis:
Teaching receptive skills for exams in not an easy thing to do. One of the reasons is the risk of ‘covert’ testing - instead of really developing the learners’ competences, we tend to focus on their assessment. Examples of such covert testing include always playing the recording twice when listening, or moving from skimming to scanning in reading activities.
Such an approach may become particularly problematic in the case of Extended Matura exam. In order to answer open-ended comprehension questions correctly, students will have to truly understand texts that are both lexically dense and structurally advanced. It seems that without some effective techniques for maximising text processing, students will neither progress, nor reach the expected C1 levels in the two receptive skills.
