What happens when an experienced English teacher puts on the hat of a matura examiner? Sometimes the answer is: frustration. As teachers, we plan carefully, choose tasks with the best intentions and believe our lessons prepare students well for the exam. Yet when we read students’ written work as examiners, we may see something different: language that is not accurate or flexible enough, texts that do not fully meet genre expectations, and exam performance that falls short of what we hoped our teaching would achieve.

In this webinar, I will share reflections from several years of working as a written and oral matura examiner – and as a reflective classroom teacher who wants to move beyond disappointment. We will ask what the examiner’s perspective can teach us about better classroom strategy: what to focus on in the final matura year, what to start building much earlier, and how to help students produce better, more appropriate and more confident English.
